Where to Put Your Christmas Wreath

A Christmas wreath is a circular decoration made from evergreens and is traditionally hung on the front door of a house. But is that the only place you can put it?

The History Of The Wreath

The word wreath comes from the Old English word ‘writhen’, which means twisted. The tradition of putting up a Christmas wreath originated in Germany in the 14th century. People would hang evergreen branches in their windows, doors, and fireplaces during the Christian period.

The Dimensions Of The Christmas Wreath

The size of a wreath is measured by the circumference, but can also depend on other factors such as the height and girth. The size you decide to go with will all depends on the location it will be hung. You also need to work out whether it will be used indoors or outdoors. You might want to opt for something small in the house and for something bigger outdoors.

Where To Place It

This may seem like a straightforward topic, but there are lots of factors to consider when hanging your Christmas wreath. Your home will have different needs based on the size of your living space and the amount of light that it gets.

It’s also important to note that Christmas wreaths are meant for indoor use only. You don’t want to ruin a pretty wreath by putting it on your front door and exposing it to the elements.

Considering The Material

When deciding where to place your wreath, you’ll need to think about the material that your wreath is made out of. You may want to put wreaths made of foliage outside if you’re worried about mess. But if you like the smell, you could decide to hang inside so it fills the room.

If you have a wreath made with rags, or any other type of fabric, you will want it to be inside. If you do hang it inside, then make sure it isn’t near any fires or lights, as you don’t want it to catch fire!

The weather where you live may also influence your decision. Don’t put something that’s easily damaged on your door if you’re expecting rain and frost (for example).

My Thoughts

Personally I love my extensive collection of Christmas wreaths. I have one hanging on my door, but I also have different styles placed throughout my home. I have wreaths that I’ve made myself (including a beautiful rag wreath) and I also plan to learn how to make foliage wreaths in the future.

Can you ever have too many wreaths? I don’t think so. If you’re decorating your home this Christmas, make sure you include a wreath. Both indoors and outdoors.
