Making a felt Christmas tree can be a fun and creative DIY project. You can then store it away and get it out year after year.
If you’re looking for a child-friendly alternative to a traditional Christmas tree, this could certainly be it. Decorating a Christmas tree may form part of the festivities, but nobody says you have to have a particular type of tree!
This is a great craft for the whole family. It’s also a fun thing to make if your child is asking for a Christmas tree in their bedroom.
How To Make A Felt Christmas Tree
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make a felt Christmas tree:
Materials you’ll need:
- Green felt fabric (for the tree)
- Various colours of felt fabric (for ornaments and decorations)
- Fabric glue or a hot glue gun
- Velcro dots or strips
- A pencil or fabric marker
- Ribbon, yarn, or string (for hanging)
Preparing The Felt Christmas Tree Template
The first step is to draw, or find, a Christmas tree template. This will be the shape of your Christmas tree. You can search online for printable templates or draw one freehand.
Cut Out The Tree
Using the green felt fabric, trace the Christmas tree template and then cut it out. This will be your main felt tree.
You don’t have to go for green felt though, some people prefer a white Christmas tree. The choice is yours and you can get as creative as you want to.
Create Ornaments And Decorations
Cut out various shapes and designs from the coloured felt fabric to create ornaments and decorations. These could include stars, snowflakes, gingerbread men, candy canes, balls and more. You can get as creative as you want to here.
You might decide to stick within a colour theme, or to add as much glitter as possible. The choice is yours!
Attach The Velcro
the next step is to attach Velcro dots, or strips, to both the back of the felt ornaments and onto the felt tree. You’ll attach the ornaments to the tree using Velcro, allowing them to be easily placed and removed. Doing this will also mean that you can refresh the design at a later date if you decide to.
Decorate Your Felt Christmas Tree
Place the Velcro-backed ornaments onto the felt Christmas tree. Arrange them as you like, creating a festive and personalised design.
Add A Trunk
Cut out a small rectangle from brown felt to serve as the tree’s trunk. Glue it to the bottom of the felt tree. You can add a tree stand if you want to, but this step isn’t required.
Hang Your Felt Christmas Tree
Attach a loop of ribbon, yarn, or string to the top of the felt tree to hang it up.
Display and Enjoy
Hang your Christmas tree on a wall or door at a height that’s easily accessible to children. They can now have fun decorating and redecorating their own tree as they like.
Remember: It’s Your Project
Remember, this DIY Christmas tree project is highly customisable. You can adjust the size, colours, and decorations according to your preferences.
There are no rules, so go for it and see what you end up with!
Involving The Children
As we’ve previously mentioned, this is a great activity to involve kids in. They can help out by cutting the shapes, choosing the colours and placing the ornaments on the tree.
As safety is important, if you’re using a hot glue gun, make sure it’s operated by an adult, and ensure that all materials are securely attached to prevent any choking hazards.
